Mastering Land Navigation | Increasing Your Accuracy
#landnavigation #mapreading #expertadvice
Navigation skills often rely on accuracy and good communication, and if you are navigating in a group then having a way to refer to a particular point on the map is rather important. Grabbing a pointy thing (pen, pencil, corner of your compass, stick) and using that instead of your stubby finger is going to make things easier for everyone.

#outdoorskills #outdoors #bushcraft In another episode of the 'Ask an Instructor' series Richard Prideaux answers a question from Aaron in Georgia (the American one): "Which is better to use and carry - a ferro rod/firesteel or a flint and steel?" This was filmed in January 2024 in North Wales. Our Courses: courses.originaloutdoors.co.uk/ Our Podcasts: originaloutdoors.co.uk/podcast/ If you hav...

Richard sits down with friend, and local farmer, Alistair (@eyarthrocks on IG) to talk about all things woodland pig. From creating the woodland paddocks, to feeding and the final loading and transportation of pigs and resulting meat. Raising pigs is a relatively new enterprise for Alistair and his wife Laura, so we wanted to get in early on asking how it had all gone after the first two groups...

Harvesting apples on a day off

Harvesting apples on a day off - with kind permission of Alistair and Laura. These are from a wildling apple tree in one of the far corners of the farm, probably the remains of a discarded apple core decades ago. We're going to use these to make cider- if we do, shall we film it and put it on here? Do you want to see more of our #homestead #farmstead life, as well as information from our course...

I believe this ridge loses about one person a year. In my 20s I've 'jogged down' here in about an hour and a half. In retrospect, it seems insane.

While much of what you say may be relatively true for the weekenders use I have arthritis in my hands and can't use those wonderful strikers without intense discomfort due to their small size. A knife handle is much easier to grasp without pain. That is also why I use 5 or 6 inch fero rods instead of little ones

Suggestion for using any axe Years back I was with some young children wanting to learn how to use an axe, Even the parents learned something, Never when splitting wood on a stump or on the grd, Never make a round hous swing Learn to bring the axe over your head and then pull straight down so the axe head travels straight into the wood If you miss, Where does the axe end up If you glance off something, It goes side ways, and it can never go towards ones self/ Then if your axe is in the wood, and you can lift it up to try and pound it down as you did I would say NOT good, The trick is to lift the wood with the axe in it straight up, Turn it over in the air and bring it down on the head, Now you will also notice when you do that You will realize the axe comes straight down just as I mentioned I hope you see the proper way to use any axe except a double headed axe as one should still only learn to bring the axe down in a straight line

Great for the price but it just looks awkwardly out of focus at what should be really straightforward ranges for a device like this. I would find this lack of manual focus really frustrating if they're all locked slightly out of focus right out the box.

I want to pinpoint one thing that you did naturally, that person should go out of the falling line EVEN BEHIND the falling tree, and occupy a diagonal position for additional safety. Because if you did at least some miscalculations or encountered some unpredicted force the cut end may bounce off into you. So please keep your distance from the tree and stay not directly behind, but diagonally when it starts to fall.

Boots getting wet and review comments. Agree and read this so often. Like you I think it may well be down to water getting in over the top or from clothing or from sweat and condensation. I've had boots that I suspected of leaking, so put them through vigorous testing; walking through inches of water in the bath, pouring water from the tap over the toe area, walking through streets and low cut grass for a couple of hours in very heavy rain.My conclusion has been that the boots are very definitely waterproof and keep my feet dry. Current boots that I have put through this test: Scarpa Ranger and Berghaus Baltra. Both I suspected of leaking, but both highly satisfactory when put through my tests.

I've often wondered why people want a fire in the rain? If it's raining, its above 31F, which aint all that cold, as long as you stay dry. If you're out in the rain, wind and cold, without a membrane to block the wind and keep you dry, well, the gene pool is better off without your stupidity
